Parent Information

Our Model

At New Horizons, we believe that families are essential partners in a child's early education. Our programs are designed to support and empower parents as active participants in their children’s learning journeys, both in the classroom and at home.

Co-oping

As a cooperative preschool, all parents play an active role in their child’s classroom experience. On a rotating basis, family members contribute their time, language, cultural experiences, and unique talents. Through co-oping, families become an integral part of our school community and gain valuable insight into child development and education. Parents also engage in school operations with volunteer jobs or on the New Horizons board.

Parent Education opportunities

New Horizons offers ongoing workshops for parents on topics identified annually by our current parents. Past topics have included:

  • Positive and effective parenting strategies

  • Language development in young children

  • Navigating public school enrollment

  • Understanding immigrant rights

  • Healthy nutrition

  • Body Safety Education with Blue Sky Bridge

Our Family Literacy Program meets monthly and is conducted in Spanish. This program empowers parents to be their child’s first and most important teacher by equipping them with tools to support literacy at home including books to build a home library.

Home Visits

Home visits are a long-standing tradition at New Horizons, and we kick-off each school year with home visits in August. The teachers visit families for about 30 minutes at their home, allowing each child to get to know the teachers in a comfortable environment, as well as gives them a chance to share a bit of their lives with us. It also gives parents an opportunity to ask questions and share their goals for their chlid for the year.
